Lady Eagles handed two home losses

By Sun Advocate

The USU Eastern women’s basketball team suffered a tough home stint last week, losing both SWAC games it hosted. The Golden Eagles first lost to Northern Idaho College on Thursday and then was handed another defeat against College of Southern Idaho on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles first lost to NIC 82-59, with NIC outscoring USUE in each period of the game. The women kept it close in the first period, only trailing by one point and went into halftime only trailing by six points. However, NIC came out of the break still energized while the Golden Eagles lacked that same energy. Mateah Tuckett and Barbara Cousino Contreras led the Golden Eagles with 12 points in the game.
Saturday did not prove much better for the Golden Eagles, as they lost to CSI 78-68. The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 30 points in the first few minutes of the final period, and although they were able to cut the deficit to 10 points, they could not muster any more than that.
Contreras scored a team-high 20 points with six three-pointers and Maile Richardson led on defense with 10 rebounds.
USUE will take a few days off before playing in a Las Vegas tournament on Dec. 29 and 30. The Golden Eagles will return home to play Colorado Northwestern Community College on Jan. 9 at 3 p.m.
