Carbon Girls’ Basketball scores tough non-region win

By Sierra Trujillo

The Carbon High School girls’ basketball team secured a win over Salem Hills High School on Tuesday, in a game that came down to the final seconds. The Dinos won the match 55-48.
With less than 15 seconds left in the game, the Dinos only led by four points, a margin that was uncomfortable to say the least. However, some costly fouls by the Skyhawks gave the Dinos a chance to shoot free throws, giving the Dinos their six-point lead and ultimately the win.
Before the final period of the game, the Dinos led by nine points, but not before battling back and forth with the Skyhawks from a tied score of 33 earlier in the period. This type of sway, from winning by eight or nine points, to a tie game, to again taking a lead, made the game stressful, but the Dinos handled the pressure well.
“We’d go up by eight and then all of the sudden the score is tied,” said head coach Ted Bianco. “We battled back, played good defense, got key rebounds and then we attacked the basket and scored.”
While the Dinos came away with the win, there were a few different errors that Bianco saw that the girls need to work on before starting region play in January. Carbon was plagued with fouls, and missed some key rebounds early in the game.
“We have to do a better job of not reaching and put ourselves in a better position where we can move our feet and not foul,” said Bianco. “Early on we didn’t get some rebounds that we should have, but I thought our rebounding got better as the game went on.”
Junior Lindsey Blanc led the Dinos with 28 points in the match, which included two three-pointers and eight free throw shots. She also tallied eight steals and six rebounds. Senior Jordan Scoggins tallied 24 points with eight field goals, one three-pointer and five free throw shots. She also tallied nine defensive rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
The Dinos will face Emery High School on Friday at home at 7 p.m. While the students and athletes may consider this a rivalry game, Bianco considers it just another game getting the girls ready for the Region play.
“They’re not in our region, they’re not 3A,” said Bianco. “It’s just another game… I want our kids to go play hard and it’s a preseason game to get us ready for our region schedule.”
