Both the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams of Carbon High School will compete at the 3A State meet in Salt Lake City after qualifying at the Region 12 meet last Tuesday.
The boys and the girls both took third place at the meet, officially qualifying them to compete as teams at Sugarhouse Park on Wednesday.
While head coach Telisse Allen expected the third place finish from the boys’ team, it was slightly disappointing on the girls’ side, who have run very well all season. She said that dehydration and just plain nerves got to the girls, which caused their third place finish.
“They put a little too much pressure on themselves, [but] they still ran strong,” said Allen of the girls team. “They just didn’t run what they’re capable of.”
Emily Broadbear finished in fourth place on the girls side, and one girl from each school in the region finished in the top five. However, whereas only 59 seconds separated the first five Carbon boys to cross the finish line, the girls were separated by four minutes, making it very hard to place above that third place mark.
However, because the top four teams from each region on the boys and girls side make it to the State meet, the Dinos will have a chance for redemption on Wednesday. Running for the girls will be Emily Broadbear, Sarah Ohlwiler, Sadie Crompton, Emma Haddock, Zaharah Rossi and Jordan Oman. Running for the boys will be Trey Richardson, Drew Jones, Anthony Jones, Paul Bryner, Kaden Kranendonk, Logan Engar and Kyle Quinton.
