The Carbon High School volleyball team defeated Richfield High School 3-1 on Tuesday night for its first Region 12 win of the season. With the victory, the Dinos have also extended their winning streak to nine matches, including tournament play at the beginning of the season.
“We started out a little slow,” said head coach Cristen Johnson of the Dinos match Tuesday night. “I think [the girls] were a little nervous, first region game, but once we put that behind us, we cut down on our unforced errors, I thought we played really well after that.”
The only loss of the night for the Dinos came in the first set, as the Dinos were defeated 25-23 after a tough back-and-forth battle. Richfield never led by more than three points, but the Dinos just could not make up the deficit.
“I knew they would bounce back because I knew it was important to them that they win this game, so once they got those nerves out from the first game, I knew they’d be fine after that,” said Johnson.
The Dinos bounced back and won the next two sets by a dominant 25-16 and 25-15. The fourth and last set proved to be another tough battle with the Dinos coming out on top. Richfield took an early 6-3 lead, and although Carbon came back to lead 15-14, Richfield took another one point lead with the score 16-15. The Dinos tied the game at 16 points and then continued on to take home the win with a final tally of 25-20.
“I want us to just keep peaking, getting better, that’s our goal, so by the time the state tournament comes around, we’re playing our best volleyball,” said Johnson.
When asked about the team’s current winning streak, Johnson laughed and said “I didn’t even know that, now you put all the pressure on us.”
“I’m happy. I just want to keep getting better and if that means we’re winning that’s great.”
Contributing to Carbon’s victory over Richfield, senior Sara Morley had 19 kills, 14 digs, and seven service aces, senior Mallorie Bradley had 39 assists, junior Brecklyn Frame had 21 digs, junior Giulia Malvicini had 12 kills, 10 digs, and four service aces and senior Jordan Scoggins had eight kills and 18 digs. The Dinos had 43 kills, 98 digs, and 13 service aces as a team.
The Dinos, now 1-0 in Region 12 and 11-5 overall, will play on the road on Thursday against Canyon View High School. The Dinos next home match will be on Sept. 29 against Juab High School at 6:30 p.m. The Sophomore game will begin at 4 p.m. and the Freshman and JV games will both begin at 5 p.m.
