The Carbon High School football team lost its’ rivalry game against Emery High School on Friday 41-7. The Dinos struggled to keep up with the Spartans, but although they came away with the loss, the Dinos had some positive aspects of the game show as well.
“Emery’s a good football club,” said Carbon head coach Josh Huntsman. “You have to give them a lot of credit. They came out and executed and they did the things they needed to do.”
The Dinos scored their only touchdown of the game on a 64-yard run by sophomore running back Nate Olson. However, as the Spartans had already scored 34 points, the Dinos chances of coming back were slim. Olson tallied 85 rushing yards in the game, with the Dinos tallying only 118 rushing yard total. Of 122 receiving yards, senior Logan Olsen had 68 yards on five receptions.
While the loss may be tough because of the rivalry with Emery, Carbon will need to have a short memory because Region 3A games begin this week. Region games are what matter most to the team, because they are what qualify the Dinos for the playoffs. Huntsman said that the team will need to focus on execution as well as the run game for this upcoming week.
“We struggled running the ball again. Its something that we’ve got to look at, something we’ve got to get fixed before we go into next week’s game,” said Huntsman.
The run game, Carbon’s focus this season, did not stand out on Friday, but Huntsman said that he was pleased with how the Dinos passed the ball and made receptions. On top of that, the Dinos never gave up throughout the game.
“We were able to throw the ball around the yard a little bit,” said Huntsman. “We had a couple of long runs there in the second half. The kids fought all the way through the game, they didn’t give up.”
The Dinos will play at home this Friday against Grantsville High School at 7 p.m.
