Three of USU Eastern’s student athletes were honored last Wednesday with National Junior College Association Academic Student-Athlete awards for the 2014-15 academic year.
• Madeline Murphy, a graduate from West High School and two year starter on the women’s basketball team, received the Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence, which recognizes students with a 4.0 GPA and at least 45 completed semester hours. Murphy was also the Salutatorian during the commencement exercises this last fall.
• Julianna Gibson, a graduate from Lehi High School and sophomore goalie on the women’s soccer team, received the Superior Academic Achievement Award, which recognizes student athletes with GPA’s above 3.8 and at least 45 completed semester hours.
• Mark Guymon, a graduate from Emery High School as well as a sophomore guard on the men’s basketball team, received the Exemplary Academic Achievement Award, which recognizes student athletes with GPA’s above 3.60 and at least 45 completed semester hours.
“We couldn’t be more proud of these athletes for their achievements in the classroom,” said Greg Dart, the Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management and interim athletic director. “They exemplify what it means to be a student athlete. They have achieved so much inside and outside of athletics and we are proud to call them Golden Eagles.”
Murphy, Gibson and Guymon were three of 1,936 athletes nationwide honored by the NJCAA for academic performance. All three also graduated from USU Eastern with honors in May.
