Soccer moms and dads have listened to ideas being kicked around about where to put a new complex of fields to handle growing participation. On Wednesday, they told the County Commission their goal.
Basically, they want the county to put the fields somewhere, anywhere, as long as it’s soon.
The choices so far are narrowed down to two: the County Fairgrounds and the vacant site of the old Durrant School near USU Eastern.
Commissioner Jae Potter is an advocate for the USUE site. The county could get a 20-year lease on the property to accommodate up to nine junior fields. The college, which has a soccer program, would rebuild its old football field across the street as a full-size field.
It’s close to downtown and positive for the college, he said.
Fairgrounds’ edge
However, there are are advantages to the fairgrounds site that ought to be considered, stated Dr. Matt Brady, president of the Price Youth Soccer Association and spokesman for the group.
First, the fairgrounds venue would have plenty of parking space, a big concern considering that a soccer tournament can bring hundreds of competitors and parents. The USUE site, in the middle of a residential neighborhood, doesn’t have that kind of parking.
Also, since soccer games often run into the late evening, it could pose a nuisance for residents. (Residents on the east side of Durrant, being interred in the cemetery, would not complain.)
As with motocross and other major events at the fairgrounds, visitors would have the option of setting up RVs or tents on site, he added.
Finally, Brady noted that the Recreation/Transportation Special Service District favors the fairgrounds site for funding.
