For the second year in a row, the Carbon High Girls Basketball team made a comeback in the final minutes to defeat their 3A First Round opponent, this time against Pineview High School in a 50-48 thrilling win at the CHS Gymnasium on Saturday evening.
Down by eight late in the fourth quarter, CHS began using a full court press that helped create turnovers leading to baskets, including a key basket and foul that Carbon’s Morgan Hillam converted to cut the deficit to 48-47. Teammate Lindsey Blanc hit two free throws to give Carbon their first lead in the second half.
Carbon kept the pressure up on defense forcing another Pineview turnover just moments later. The Lady Dinos began to milk the clock forcing Pineview to foul sending CHS senior Taylor Oliver to the free throw line. She hit one of two free throws to give CHS a 50-48 lead that was good enough to hold up for the final 30 seconds of the game.
The game was reminiscent of Carbon’s fourth quarter comeback 33-31 win on the road over Juan Diego last season in which they used a late game run to pull out a victory in the 3A First Round.
Blanc led the Lady Dinos with 13 points. Hillam (12 points) and teammate Jordan Scoggins (11) also finished in double figures for CHS. Oliver, who hit two key 3-pointers in the second half, and senior forward Beth Child each added seven points for the Lady Dinos.
With the win, Carbon advances to the 3A Quarterfinals where they will face Stansbury on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 4:10 p.m. at the Maverik Center in West Valley City.
