Going into the Gunnison Tournament, the Carbon High Wrestling team had plenty stacked against them.
Injuries have began to pile up, illnesses have hit hard and a tough string of performances leading into the tournament were weighing on the team.
But despite all that, the Dinos held strong and came away with a second place finish out of 16 teams participating at the event over the weekend.
“I didn’t think we’d do as well as we did,” said CHS Head Coach Steve Woodhouse noting the injuries that have hurt the team. “The kids performed really well and they are continuing to show no quit out there.”
The Dinos finished just 16 points behind top place Millard, Woodhouse said.
Some of the key performances that saw wrestlers finish near the top of their weight class included Bradlee Chatterton, Dillon Lowe, Nathan Velasquez, Wyatt Jeffs, Jasper Thayn, Tyler Wood, Clayton Rhoades, Kayden Gibson, Cody Lowe and others.
With just two weeks left in the season before Region and State Competitions, the success at the Gunnison Tournament will have a positive effect on the team moving forward, Woodhouse explained.
“This result will help as we get ready for the two weeks of duels and region matches,” he said. “The kids are wrestling better each week and they are continuing to learn about what they are capable of.”
The Dinos will host North Sevier on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. They will travel to South Sevier on Wednesday before hosting Delta on Thursday evening at 7 p.m.
