Now fully recovered, Garrett Blanc looking to go out on high note with Carbon High football team
In the first game of his senior season, Garrett Blanc quickly made an impact.
Blanc scored two touchdowns for Carbon High, including a 58-yard interception return on defense, that helped push the Dinos to a season opening 30-12 win over Grand County High School on August 22.
It was a moment he had to wait nearly a year for after suffering a season-ending concussion on Sept. 13, 2013 in a loss to North Sanpete.
Because of the concussion protocol, Blanc had to lay on the field for several minutes until and ambulance arrived to take him to a local hospital for tests. Blanc was forced to sit out the rest of season due to the injury.
Stepping on the field this season for the first time, Blanc said he the support from family, friends and the community played a huge role in motivating him.
“It feels amazing to have great support from everyone,” Blanc said after the game. “It just feels perfect, getting the win and having a game like this. I couldn’t have scripted it any better than that.”
Fellow senior quarterback Jarod Lessar credited Blanc with helping Carbon alleviate early game jitters by scoring on the team’s first drive of the season with a 54-yard touchdown catch.
“Garrett set the tone for us with that play and the interception,” said Lessar.
Carbon High Head Coach Jan Jorgensen said he was pleased to see Blanc play such a big role in the win over Grand High after returning from an injury.
“I’m very happy for him and it’s nice to see him have a game like that,” said Jorgensen. “Garrett has worked his butt off in workouts and in practice.
With a long season still left to play, Blanc said the team is motivated to continue to get better while trying to revitalize a program that has struggled in recent years.
“We need to focus on the small things and keep attacking on offense and defense from here on out,” he said.
