Carbon to host Grand High on Friday evening in a rematch of last season’s opener
After all of the hard work in the offseason lifting weights, running the steps at the football stadium and learning the nuances of newer offensive and defensive schemes, now is the time for the Carbon High School Football team to apply that work on the field.
And the long wait is nearly over as the Dinos will open the 2014 season when they host the Grand County High Red Devils on Friday evening at 7 p.m. at the Carbon High Football Field.
The game will be one of the many firsts for the Dinos. For CHS Head Coach Jan Jorgensen it will be the first time he stands on the sidelines as a coach instead of being out on the field as a player. Jorgensen, who starred for Carbon High from 1999-2003, was a standout defensive lineman at BYU from 2006-2009.
For the players, the new season will provide them with a fresh start as they begin to build towards the future. Carbon will enter the game against Grand with a 17 game losing streak that dates back to early 2012. Many of the games last season ended with Carbon on the wrong side of a lopsided score as they went winless over the course of 10 games.
Carbon will look to be led by a strong, stalwart defense that Jorgensen hopes will replicate the success seen at BYU during his tenure.
The Carbon offense will also fully unveil their new read-option attack that relies heavily on reading the opposing defense before every snap. Since the beginning of the 2012 season, Carbon has moved from a spread offense to a traditional I-Formation and now to the read-option. The offense has struggled to score in recent years as the Dinos averaged 3.4 points per game in 2013, compared to 10.5 points per game in 2012.
The Dinos will be looking to exact a measure of revenge against Grand after suffering a 48-7 loss to the Red Devils in the opener in Moab last season. Carbon quickly fell behind and were never able to build momentum against a motivated Grand team that ended the season in the 2A Championship game.
