CHS swimmers pick up split against Emery

By Sun Advocate

The Carbon High girls swim team helped the Dinos pick up a split against rival Emery High last week.
The girls were victorious against the Spartans with a score of 88-72 while the CHS boys lost to Emery 97-73.
“I was very happy with the results,” said CHS swim coach Kamra Davis. Davis said the team was dealing with a number of swimmers who were held out due to illnesses.
Girls started the meet off with the 200 medley relay placing 2nd with a time of 2:14.58. Boys have struggled in this event all year we really needed a better time to hold on to our chance to take this team to state, boys answered my concerns by dropping two seconds off their time and placing 1st. Lauren Engar captured 1st in the girls 200 free and teammate Ali Heath brought home 2nd. Boys 200 free top scorer and 3rd place was Harrison Torgerson. In the 200 individual medley Veronica Ibanez placed 2nd, Addy Olson 3rd and Sadie Crompton in 4th swimming her best and knocking off 5 sec. off her time. Joseph Keller easily captured 1st in the 200 I.M. Next event is the fast pace 50 free. Brittney Willson takes 1st place for the girls and Joel Garff takes 1st for the boys. Carbon girls dominate the 100 butterfly Lauren Engar with her best time of 1:13.52 finishes 1st and Tatianna Larsen in 2nd. Girls 100 free was a race I have been waiting 4 years for, Brittney Willson has had a goal of a 101 for years and always misses it with a 102 well today finally was the day finishing 1st with a time of 1:01.62 at her last home meet she will be graduating this year. Heidi Prettyman also swam her best time with a 1:09.43 and placed 2nd. Joel Garff swam an awesome time in his 100 free and placing 1st with a 52:80. The 500 is the longest event and I have a hard time getting anyone to love this event, Veronica Ibanez is that rare breed that loves it and in the past week she has dropped 6 sec. off her time and guaranteed her spot at state she placed 2nd with a 6:20.59. Joseph Keller, who Davis said he surprised during the meet by willingly swimming the 500, swam a great time of 6:18.15 and captured 1st place.
Carbon really swam well in the 200 free relay girls improving their time of 1:56.07 took first this relay consisted of Lauren Engar, Addy Olson, Sadie Crompton, and Brittney Willson. Boys also swimming well and placing 1st this relay consisted of Joseph Keller, Kaden Earl, Ryan Atwood, and Joel Garff.
In the 100 backstroke Susannah Ohlwiler takes 2nd place. Harrison Torgerson also takes 2nd with his best time of 1:21.55. 100 breaststroke had Sadie Crompton in 3rd and Connor Holyoak in 2nd. Last event of the night had Carbon girls on top it was a close race as Willson dove in with only a slight lead and Davis said she knew an Emery star swimmer had a slightly better time than her but Willson swam another best time and out touched Emery by a half second. Carbon boys finished in third place to finish off the meet.
Carbon has one more meet before region as the team will travel to Uintah on Jan. 22.
“My swimmers always swim well at that pool and I am looking forward to see their times drop,” said Davis.
The region meet will be in Richfield on Jan. 30.
