Southeastern Utah Fishing Report

By Sun Advocate

ABAJO MOUNTAINS: (November 27) Heavy snow fell on the Abajo Mountains last week, blocking access to Foy and Monticello reservoirs. Conservation Officer Dennis Shumway reported that pike fishing had been picking up at Recapture Reservoir. Overall, there seems to be very little interest in fishing across San Juan County.

DUCK FORK RESERVOIR: (November 15) The reservoir has frozen, but we don’t have any reports on ice thickness. You’ll likely need a snow machine to access the reservoir. Use caution.

ELECTRIC LAKE: (November 27) On Nov. 25, Aquatics Biologist Calvin Black reported that the lake was entirely open water, the boat ramp is out of the water and the access road is covered in snow.

HUNTINGTON NORTH RESERVOIR: (November 22) On Nov. 17, Tom Ogden fly fished from a tube and caught nine rainbow trout in four hours. HUNTINGTON RESERVOIR: (November 27) On Nov. 25, Aquatics Biologist Calvin Black reported that the reservoir was completely covered in ice. Near the dam, the ice ranged from 4 to five inches thick. Some anglers are already fishing on the ice, but you should use caution and practice all ice safety techniques.
                                                                        •••
JOES VALLEY RESERVOIR: (November 15) There are very few anglers fishing the reservoir this fall, which likely means that fishing is slow.

MILLSITE RESERVOIR & STATE PARK: (November 27) On Nov. 25, Tom Ogden and Perry Bunderson flyfished from float tubes. They caught 14 rainbow, 13 cutthroat and one splake trout in five hours. The trout ranged from 13 to 16 inches, except for one cutthroat that measured 23.5-inches. Tom and Perry used fast-sinking line and size 4 to 8 wooly buggers and leech patterns. Most of the fish were hooked in deep water; about 45 to 60 feet deep.

SCOFIELD RESERVOIR: (November 27) Aquatics Biologist Calvin Black visited the reservoir at 1 p.m. on Nov 25. At the time of his visit, the temperature was 39°F and skies were clear. There is a thin, 1/2-inch to 1/4-inch layer of ice over most of the reservoir. There were some areas of open water, like in the dam cove, where anglers were fishing from the shoreline. If you’re planning to fish over Thanksgiving weekend, be prepared for open water and ice. If you plan to ice fish, use caution and practice all ice safety techniques.

                                                                        •••
WRIGLEY SPRINGS RESERVOIR: (November 15) The reservoir has iced over, but we don’t have any reports on ice thickness. Use caution.
