Southeastern Utah Fishing Report

By Sun Advocate

ABAJO MOUNTAINS: (August 13) Conservation Officer Dennis Shumway reports slow fishing around the county. The heat has been keeping a lot of people in the water, rather than fishing it. Pike and bass fishing at Recapture can be good in the early morning with crankbaits, tube jigs or spinner baits. Fishing is good at Foy Reservoir using dry flies or PowerBait.
BENCHES POND: (August 26) Kathy Jo Martinez reported good fishing with worms and PowerBait last weekend. Conservation Officer Devin Christensen reports heavy fishing pressure and good fishing as well. The pond still attracts a lot of anglers, likely because of the catch rate.
BOULGER RESERVOIR: (August 26) Fishing continues to be fair to good at this small pond by Electric Lake. Kathy Jo Martinez reports moderate fishing pressure and generally good fishing with worms and PowerBait. Conservation Officer Devin Christensen reports good fishing conditions and recommends using nightcrawlers.
CARBON COUNTY COMMUNITY FISHING POND: (August 26) Over the last week, anglers have seen good fishing using worms and PowerBait. Ryan Shadey reported fair fishing last Saturday, but he caught 24 fish on Sunday (using Schadeycreek lures). He says that the fish seemed to respond to lures only.
CLEVELAND RESERVOIR: (August 26) The bite has been fair for anglers using nightcrawlers. Boaters report having better luck than shoreline anglers. Fish in deeper water during early mornings and you’ll be more successful. Last weekend, Conservation Officer Devin Christensen described fishing as slow.
DUCK FORK RESERVOIR: (August 19) Aquatics Biologist Calvin Black reported good fishing with woolly buggers. Tom Ogden reported good fishing in recent weeks using woolly bugger and leech patterns on fast sinking line from a kick boat in 15 to 25 feet of water.
ELECTRIC LAKE: (August 19) The boat ramp is out of the water. Launch a motor boat is at your own risk. Fishing should be fair.
FERRON CREEK: (August 19) Fly fishing is good using hopper or mosquito patterns.
GIGLIOTTI POND: (August 19) A week ago, Ryan Shade reported fair fishing using Shadeycreek lures. Some of the fish were about two pounds. The trout were especially attracted to chartreuse and red colors.
HUNTINGTON GAME FARM POND: (August 26) On September 21, the Division of Wildlife Resources will hold a family fishing event at the game farm pond, which will be freshly stocked with rainbow trout. Fishing will run from 8 until 11 a.m. The DWR will furnish all equipment and bait. The event is free to the public.
HUNTINGTON RESERVOIR: (August 26) Fishing is slow and there aren’t many anglers on the water.
JOES VALLEY RESERVOIR: (August 26) On August 23, the DWR stocked Joes Valley with a truckload of 5-inch tiger muskies, purchased from South Dakota. This summer, Joes Valley anglers have been catching and releasing adult tiger muskies close to 40 inches long, which is the minimum size limit for legal harvest. A number of 40-inch tiger muskies should be available by next summer.
LOWER FISH CREEK: (August 26) One fly angler reports good fishing with a moth imitation. Fly anglers have been experiencing better fishing than bait casters.
LOWER GREEN RIVER: (August 26) Fishing for catfish will be good in the eddies and in slow water. Chicken livers are the bait of choice. On September 14, the Division of Wildlife Resources will host a kids’ fishing event at the pond at the Green River State Park pond near the golf course. The event is free and rod, reels, bait and instruction will be offered. The event will run from 9 a.m. until noon. The pond will be stocked prior to the event.
PETES HOLE: (August 26) This pond has provided good fishing all summer. Excellent fishing is expected over the Labor Day holiday. Worms and PowerBait are recommended.
POTTERS PONDS: (August 19) Fishing is good in the early morning or late evening with traditional baits or artificial flies.
SCOFIELD RESERVOIR: (August 26) Several anglers report catching only chubs from the shoreline. Chub meat continues to be the best bait, but after catching enough chubs for bait, the best strategy is to access deeper water with a boat or other watercraft.
Jim Levanger of Scofield Snack n Pack says that a number of anglers have reported good fishing. Aquatics Manager Justin Hart says that fishing is picking up and experienced anglers will still find quality fishing. As autumn approaches, fishing always gets better. It crests in late October and remains good until the reservoir ices over.
SOUP BOWL: (August 26) Fishing is good with a variety of baits. Worms and PowerBait have been most popular.
