Rep. Jason Chaffetz recognized outstanding high school students from the Third Congressional District who were awarded the Youth Community Citizenship Award on Monday, April 8. Carbon High School’s Madison Alleman of Price was among the 21 chosen for the honor. The recipients are chosen on the basis of their significant service contributions to their communities.
“These students have demonstrated a commitment to community that cannot be measured by grade point average alone,” said Rep. Chaffetz. “Their willingness to proactively seek opportunities to improve the lives of others stands as an example to all of our youth.”
Alleman, who is the regional Sterling Scholar winner for social science, has volunteered with political events and campaigns as well as the United Way. Alleman has competed successfully in high school debate competitions and is the debate team captain.
During the ceremony, Rep. Chaffetz shared with the youth some of the decisions he made as a youth that changed the direction of his own life. The 21 winners of the Youth Community Citizenship Award were nominated by their respective high schools and selected by Congressman Chaffetz. All high schools in the 3rd District were invited to participate. Each student has demonstrated exemplary citizenship and academic excellence throughout their high school careers.
The Congressional Award for Youth is open to students beginning at age 13 ½ and requires them to set and achieve goals in four areas: voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness, and expedition/exploration. Students who reach bronze, silver and gold medals in the program may receive those awards from Congressman Chaffetz.
