On Friday September 12th the cross country team participated in the biggest cross country meet in the state. Over 40 schools were in attendance, ranging from 1A division to 5A division. The day started at 3 p.m., with the rookie girl’s race. This race had over 200 runners in it. Nelson was the only one from Carbon in this race. The beginning of the race an athlete from Davis High was tripped in the first 100 meters stopping the race and having to restart. The second start Nelson got out well before the course bottle necked forcing runners to settle behind the pack. She remained in the top 30 the entire race and finished 24th overall.
The rookie boy’s heat followed including Carbon’s Skylar Larsen, Derek Quinton, and Brendon Hepworth. This race also included more than 200 runners. Larsen finished 86th.
The J.V. boys were next. This race had the largest field and Kaeden Kulow, Shane Dolinski and Preston Grant were part of the 350 competitors. Kaeden Kulow finished in 140th place, running very well.
Patricia Smith was the only Carbon runner in the girl’s Varsity heat. She ran with some of the toughest female runners in the state. Nationally ranked Davis stood to the left of her on the starting line. This race had 224 competitors. Smith had a great start and surged to the front of the pack.
The field spread as the race approached the two mile marker. Smith was running in approximately 20th place with a little more than 800 meters to go. She rounded the last turn and with 200 meters to go and had a remarkable 13th place finish. Smith not only finished in the top 20 at the biggest meet in the state she also placed well as a 3A competitor. This meet gives herself and Coach Allen a better look at what she can achieve at state.
The Varsity boys had one thing on their minds and that was North Sanpete, their region competitors. Tatton, Kaleb Kulow and Justin Hepworth were in front of North Sanpetes third place runner.
Richens was on the heels of the fourth runner and Olsen finished in front of North Sanpetes fifth runner. North Sanpete came out on top.
“With this tight pack, when region comes around, we have the depth to compete with them (North Sanpete). Overall we ran very well and look forward to our next meet where we will compete against North Sanpete again,” summed up Coach Allen.
Carbon will run in Delta this Friday before hosting the Carbon Invitational on Sept. 24.
