Longhorns pick up big win over Carbon Dino Football

By Sun Advocate

As the pre-season play winds its way down, the good news for the Dino Football squad is that they are scoring more points with each game. The bad news is that they still haven’t stopped their opponents enough to win. They lost to Altamont 32-13 on Friday night.
Altamont drew first blood against the Dinos Friday, but Carbon answered right back on a 52 yard run by Andrew Salazar. Damian Olson kicked the extra point and Carbon was ahead by one. Altamont put up another scoring drive in the second to take the lead. The Dinos again regained the lead when Tysen Stevens caught a pass from quaterback Blake Najera. The extra point attempt failed and the game was tied. It was on a penalty assessed to Coach Leo Paur that gave Altamont the chance to score as the half wound down and take the lead. The Dinos had them stopped and ready to punt when Paur was flagged for interference after being bumped by the ref. Altamont got new life on the drive and punched it in.
“In all my years of coaching, I have never had this happen,” stated Paur. “I got called on it twice and I am positve I was on my side of the line, but they called it anyway.”
In the second half Carbon had several chances to add to their total. But dropped passes and a few bad breaks left them empty handed. Altamont left the third the same way. But they were able to add 12 more in the fourth to put the Dinos away.
Paur was hoping to leave Altamont with a win, but he knows the whole thing is a slow and painful process to build the team. “I didn’t yell at them after the loss because they gave it everything they had. We are improving and I can’t ask them for anything else. I know there are still better games ahead.”
Carbon will play Grantsville on the road this Friday and then come home to meet Ogden on Sept. 19.
