COTTONWOOD, Ariz. – Ernest Hartmann, loved and known as “Ernie,” 81 of Cottonwood, Ariz., passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, after a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 20, 1926 in Newark, N.J., to Frederick Ernest and Emma (Lange) Hartmann.
Ernie attended Utah State University from 1948 to 1952 and received his bachelor’s degree. Later, he attended the University of Utah from 1968 to 1972 where he obtained his doctorate’s degree.
He was park superintendent and operated the swimming pools for many years in Price. He was a member of the Price volunteer fire department. He also taught classes at CEU.
After moving from Price in 1970, Ernie taught parks and recreation for over 20 years at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse.
He was also a WWII veteran, having served his country with the United States Navy.
Ernie was always very active with the Boy Scouts of America and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award.
He also enjoyed bird watching and had the opportunity for world travel.
Ernie leaves behind his wife, Beth Hartmann of Cottonwood, Ariz.; his son, Alan Hartmann, and his wife, Mary Jo, of Salt Lake City; his daughter, Pam Lovejoy, and her husband, Kim, of Waukesha, Wis.; his sister, Lore Ullrich of Union, N.J.; and his grandson, Zeke Hartmann of Salt Lake City.
A memorial service was Monday, Sept. 8, followed by a reception at Westcott Funeral Home in Cottonwood, Ariz.
