There was good news and bad news last week for the Carbon High football squad. The bad news was the Dinos lost 33-6 to Uintah on Friday night. The good news was they went from a 35-member squad to one fielding 52 players in one week.
With the new addititons, nothing was quite right about practice this week for the Dinos. It was like six steps backward as they tried to pull the new players up to speed quickly and work them into the routine of the existing squad.
“Practices were disjointed and unorganized this week and we played the same way.” stated Coach Paur as he attempted to make sense of the loss. “We made so many mental mistakes that we didn’t make the week before. Uintah has a good team and were looking to avenge their big loss the week before and we were not prepared.”
The Dinos managed to put their first points of the season up on a long pass from Blake Najera to Tyson Stevens in the fourth. Paur noted Stevens was double teamed all night on the offense and they stayed away from him and ran to the Carbon weak side when he was in on defense. Stevens will return to play tight end after trying him at fullback.
Zach Rodriguez had several good rushing yards as he carried back the kick-offs and punts from Uintah. “He will break one soon,” commented Paur.
Paur also noted the play again of Lance Deeter who he always gets great play from as well as Stevens. Mostly Paur notes that the biggest weakness of this year’s team is the young inexperienced offensive line. They just can’t open up a hole for the running game and that makes it hard to move the ball down field.
But even as disruptive as it is to have to keep teaching new players the ropes, Paur feels like this bodes well for the long term success of the program. He plans to keep the door open to encourage new players to come out for the team.
Despite the slow start, he is still ecouraged about the season. “The story isn’t over yet. The kids are going to get better quickly. I have a good feeling about this.”
Next week, Carbon is away at Altamont and won’t return home until September 19 when they take on Ogden.
