The Carbon High girl’s soccer team led off the 2008-09 prep sports season with a pair of pre-season games at the Carbon soccer field. With a new coach and many new faces on the team, the squad dropped both of their opening contests. On Tuesday they lost 6-0 to Canyonview. Then as they went right back at it, they lost 5-2 to Spanish Fork on Wednesday.
Assistant Coach Patrick Clifford had the helm because Coach Jerad Upwald had a previously scheduled commitment. Clifford pointed out that they wanted to challenge their squad and made sure that they would play some tough teams to prepare for region action. Canyonview and Spanish Fork were two of those challenges.
On Wednesday, the Carbon varsity took the field short a few key players. Still, Clifford felt like they played a solid game. Canyonview just played better. “They are a sharp team and were well coached,” he stated after the loss.
But the purpose of pre-season match-ups is to prepare and the game showed the team where their weaknesses are.
Playing back-to-back games, the team suited up again on Wednesday to take on 5A Spanish Fork. Even though Carbon was undermanned by the much larger team from over the mountain, the girls held their own. They made the Dons work for their points.
By the half it was still close. The Dons had sent two in the net, while Hannah Downard had put Carbon on the board with one of her own. Felicia Olmos sent past the Spanish Fork goalie in the second period of play. But Spanish Fork had the depth to substitute freely and ran away with the game with three more goals.
The Lady Dinos will take on South Summit next week on August 20 and Morgan on the 21. Region play will begin September 10 with a home game against North Sanpete. All home games begin with the varsity match-up at 3:30 p.m.
