Sunnyside council considers city’s public safety options

By Sun Advocate

Sunnyside and East Carbon City continue to debate budget issues concerning police coverage.
The Sunnyside and East Carbon councils have voted to move the termination date of the contract back 60 days from the previous July 18 cut off date to Sept. 18 to give the cities more time to find a solution to the dispute.
Sunnyside was faced with a similar situation five years ago when the two cities failed to reach an agreement.
East Carbon City Police Department ceased coverage of the connecting town before Sunnyside was prepared to start its own law enforcement agency, resulting in an absence of coverage. During the period of no coverage, there were several calls that were not responded to due to Sunnyside not having met the necessary requirements to provide police protection, according to Cletis Steele of AP
