On Father’s Day weekend in Helper, people will cruise back to the days when gas cost 31 cents a gallon and a dozen eggs would set you back 57 cents.
Roger Metzger, who is one of the main organizers of Cruise Night set for June 13, updated the Helper City Council on plans for the event at their May 15 meeting. Cruise Night is being held in conjunction with the annual car show.
“We are going to start at the Catholic Church, go south on Birch, take a right on 100 West to Maple and then turn by the wood shop,” Metzger said. “Then we will start all over again.”
Downtown will be transformed by the classic cars slowly winding their way through the streets, the sounds of artists like Booker T & the MGs, Gene Chandler, The Shirelles and Dion filling the air and iconic scenes from “American Graffiti” lighting up the night in the Locust Street park.
Two radio stations will be on hand all night playing hits from the 1960s while a projector set up in the park will show the George Lucas classic that captured the days when being an outlaw youth meant riding up and down a designated street over and over.
Metzger said that about 50 gleaming, souped up and cherry cars will make the loop around town giving residents and visitors a birds- eye-view of times gone by.
Councilmembers and Police Chief Trent Anderson said residents should be aware that the streets won’t be closed off during the cruise and that drivers should exert caution.
“Everybody is going to have to pay attention,” Anderson said.
Some good old American food will top off the event. The Clampers will have their grills out turning out the dogs and burgers.
This year’s car show is hosted by the Butch Cassidy Gang Car Club and will have more than 50 different classes with a trophy to be awarded in each class. In addition to the revved-up eye candy attendees can swim for free in the city’s pool and kids will be treated to a free model car show.
