On Saturday, May 3, Brigham Young University conducted its annual invitational tract and field meet.
There were teams from Idaho and other states as well as most of the best squads from Utah. “You have to meet a certain standard in each event to qualify to compete in this prestigious event,” explained coach Stew Foster.
On Saturday, 3A, 4A, and 5A schools competed against each other for state supremacy. The meet included four or five athletes which are already rated as the number one competitor in for event in the country.
“There were some fantastic performances taking place this day,” said Foster.
Carbon was represented by some fine athletes who met the qualifying standards, continued Foster
Kent Olsen ran a fast 800 meters in his heat and came from last place at the start to finish in sixth place in his heat. “He ran a personal best 2:03,” said Foster.
The five athletes ahead of him were within 1 to 1/100 of a second ahead. Kent finished fifth out of the 3A athletes in the six heats in which he participated.
Karrisa Nelson and Carson Tatton were the only freshmen competing in the sprints and gave a stand out performance for the Dinos
“Felicia Olmos ran a great 200 and 100 meter sprint,” said Foster.
In the hurdles Brock Morley and Brett Wells ran personal best times and looked great in the process. They finished first and third in their 300 meter hurdles heat.
Chris Rummel ran a strong 400 meters, and Jordan Tatton participated in the 100 meter run.
Megan Garvin placed fifth in her flight in the javelin and was in the last eight highjumpers left in contention before the bar was raised to 5’4″.
Some of the other athletes participating were Kristen Jewkes (freshmen) and Andrew Quinton.
Ryan Rasmussen and Jed Prettyman qualified and participated in the men’s high jump. Derek Quinton, Rasmussen and Tatton also participated in the long jump.
“We were proud of all the athletes who represented Carbon High School,” concluded Foster.
Carbon’s next meet will be region at Carbon High School, Thursday, May 8 at 10 a.m.
