With a final score like something you would see from Wrigley Field when the wind was blowing out, the Carbon Dinos out slugged the North Sanpete Hawks to take a 16-12 win in a nine inning affair.
The beginning of the game started slow. Pitcher Josh Dennison gave up a run in the first to the Hawks. Carbon came back in the second to tie it up. North Sanpete sent a pair across in the third to take a 3-1 lead.
The Dinos added a single in the fourth and the Hawks answered with another pair to hold their lead at 5-2. Finally the Dino offense woke up and blasted the Hawks with seven runs in the fifth.
With a Carbon pitching change, the Hawks teed off for four of their own to tie it right back up. The Dinos went right back at them with three in the top of the sixth and then shut the Hawks down.
Entering the seventh with things looking good for the Dinos, however, the Hawks managed to hit three home to send the game into extra innings. No one scored in the eighth.
The Dinos needed to end it and again had one more big inning in them. They added four to their score.
Carbon shut down the Hawks in the ninth to end the marathon game.
Ron Herrera helped the winning effort with a triple and a homerun blast. He also came on to close and pitched himself out of a jam that would have given the Hawks the win. Dennison was credited with the win.
Coach Moynier recognized the whole team for making things happen. “We got key hits from many players when we needed them. It was a slug fest and there were so many of the players who came through with hits at the right time.”
Moynier knows this is a big win. It puts the Dinos right back into the thick of the region eight race for the second place spot. Emery, Delta and Carbon are each sitting within a game of each other.
The Dinos head to Delta Tuesday for their last doubleheader of the season. “Beating North Sanpete has given us a chance to move up. We have to win both games against Delta to make that happen.”
After the Delta games, Carbon will take on Emery at home for their final regular season game. That game will start at 3:30 p.m on the Dino field.
