With region action winding down, the Dino soccer team finds itself running out of time to post a win. Last week Delta and Juan Diego came out on top in games against the Carbon boys.
Wednesday was the biggest loss so far in region play, with Carbon dropping the game 5-1 against the Delta Rabbits. On Friday the team headed up to take on Juan Diego and were shut out 2-0.
In the Wednesday match-up, the team played an even game against Delta. It was the usually solid goalie, Jake Malone who let the game slip away. “Even your top players can have a bad game. And When Malone has his, it affects the whole team.” commented Coach Clifford.
The ironic twist in the game was the only Dino that scored was goalie Malone. He sent a goal kick down field that bounced up and over the head of the Rabbit goalie into the net for the only Carbon score.
Regrouping from the loss, the Dinos headed north to take on the Soaring Eagles. Clifford was pleased with his team and felt like they really held their own against one of the best 3A teams in the state. Each team took eight shots on goal in the first half. Juan Diego snuck one past Malone for a score on what Coach Clifford described as a fantastic play.
Travis Hobbs manuevers around a Rabbit defender in Wednesday’s game. Following the Delta game the Dinos nearly pulled off a victory over Juan Diego as they were downed by a goal 2-1. Despite the losses the Dinos will have at least one post season game coming up. |
In the second half, Carbon had the edge with 11 shots on goal to nine from Juan Diego. Again though it was the Soaring Eagles who made another great shot to score. The Dinos lost 2-0.
Clifford summed it up, “They made the plays and we didn’t. I am proud of the way our team played but we need to find a way to finish it. We have a fantastic team and are just a pay or two away from being an elite team. Unfortunately we are running out of time this year.”
The last regular season game will be this Wednesday with North Sanpete on the road. Carbon lost to the Hawks earlier by a single goal in the final two minutes of the game.
Carbon will have at least one post season game which will most likely be against Cedar City.
