Kelsey Gillespie fields a hit in the first game of the Carbon/ Emery doubleheader Tuesday afternoon, the Spartans pounded the ball all day long. |
The winds were just as fierce as the week before, but this time it was Emery that blew out the Dinos in a pair of region wins. Carbon lost the pair by the scores of 14-6 and 12-0 to the Spartans.
A foreboding of things to come came in the very first batter that stepped up for Emery. She pounded a hit that hugged the third base line. Out fielder Tammy Harwood dove to catch the ball and just missed. As the ball rolled to the fence, the Spartan runner rounded the bases for an inside the park homerun. Before the inning was over, two more Emery hits sailed over the fence and it was 5-0.
Carbon chipped away at the deficit and had moved to 6-3 by the fifth. But in the sixth, Emery found their stroke and added three.
Then they iced things up with another five in the seventh. The Dinos gave it one last effort with three of their own, but it was too little , too late.
In the second game, as the temperatures dropped and the winds picked up, Carbon lost their ability to score a run. Emery scored a pair in the first and a pair in the third. The Spartans broke it open with seven in the fourth.
The Lady Dinos committed 16 errors over two games to give Emery second chances on the base pads.
After the game, Coach Pinedo didn’t have much left to say, Emery proved they are a top team. They played a complete game.”
He added, “Until we get some consistency on defense we can’t be considered a good team. These are the first games this season we haven’t even been in it. We weren’t mentally ready. Even in our other losses I felt like we were always in the games until the end.”
The Dinos play a pair at Juan Diego next Tuesday. Carbon’s only region win was a big one over the top ranked Soaring Eagle. They will return home to play North Sanpete on Thursday April 24th at 3:30 pm.
