Super Tuesday, politics and the 2008 Utah Legislative session are leaving so much to write about, but for now I am content to just sit back and enjoy the shows they present.
Of course the big event last Sunday was the hoopla we call the Super Bowl. It has evolved so much past a sporting event to an uniquely American circus.
Over the past few years many of us have found the game between the two teams that have made it to the championship rather anti-climactic. We have turned our attention to the commercials that air during the show.
This year I have to say that it was the game, not the commercials that were worth watching. The price each advertiser pays to air their message during the show is now gone beyond absurdity. The messages I saw during the game did not impress me at all.
There was one that just plain grossed me out and most of you know which one that was. Only one made me laugh. I think it was a beer commercial, but I don’t completely remember. So if we didn’t remember the products being hawked, how effective was the message that they paid for.
The other piece of the Super Bowl that used to be one of the centerpieces of the event was the halftime show. I like Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers music, but the show was a real snooze for all the build-up.
The event promoters are so paranoid of offending anyone after the wardrobe malfunction incident that they seem to be frozen in time. Why does the half time show have to be a rock concert anyway?
The last few Olympic games put on some pretty spectacular productions that highlighted the host areas. Why not think about that as a halftime extravaganza? The Super Bowl moves around each year and it could be a way to highlight the featured city and give local talent a venue.
Instead the half time show has turned into a great time to use the bathroom, get something to eat and visit with friends.
I was glad the game was close this year. It made it fun to watch for the reason that the event was first meant for. I originally didn’t care since all the teams I like self destructed early in the season. I do like to root for the underdog, so the Giants became my choice.
So while many important events that may change the course of our state and country’s future are going on around us, I decided to waste my forum to digress about the Super Bowl. In the end, this event that has so much hype is just that, hype.
Our lives go on and most of us will forget who won in a few years. The game did not fix our ailing economy, no matter how much was spent per second for each commercial. We still have moral, ethical and political issues to deal with, no matter who performs the halftime show. And last of all, neither Eli Manning or Tom Brady will make any laws, decisions or policies that will change our lives in the near future so it doesn’t matter who really won the game in the end. It was all for entertainment.
Too bad I didn’t put any money on it. Sounds like I would have made a killing on the Giants.
