The Carbon girl’s swim team placed 10th out of 18 teams that participated at the 3A State Swimming Championship. Ogden took eighth with 59 points, Rowland Hall St. Marks High School took ninth with 56 points, Carbon was tenth with 55 points.
The Dinos ended up placing ahead of Uintah, Bear River, Richfield, South Summit, Delta, Ben Lomond, Grantsville, and Waterford High Schools. This is the highest a Carbon swim team has placed at state in quite a few years.
The Carbon girls were led by freshman Krissia Beatty. She placed eighth in the 50 Free and fifth in the 100 Back. April Sorensen, a senior, was close behind with two bests in individual events.
The Carbon girls’s Medley Relay with Beatty, Elizabeth Kobe, Sorensen, and Zoe Hume placed eleventh. The 200 Free Relay; made up of Kobe, Megan Garff, Cherokee Sartori, and Nannie
Lowe took fifteenth. The 400 Free Relay with Hume, Emily Hunt, Sorensen, Beatty placed tenth. “Great job on the relays,” was the message Coach Cox wanted to pass on to her team.
The Carbon boy’s did not fare as well this year, but they did earn six points for their relays. The boy’s were led by Senior Michael Rigby who competed individually in the 100 Fly with a personal best finish. Junior Ryan Slane qualified as an alternate in the 500 Free, but he did not have the opportunity to swim.
Carbon boy’s had two relays qualify for state and the third was an alternate relay which did not get to compete. The boy’s medley relay with Tim Neilson, Nick Torres, Rigby, Terrence Henrie placed 16th with their best time this season. The boy’s 400 Free Relay with Brett Davis, Matthew Sartori, Andrew Gomez, and Rigby placed fifteenth. They cut six seconds off their best time.
Several Carbon teams were qualified as alternates if another team had to scratch from the event. None of the teams had the opportunity to swim, but were dressed and ready. Relay alternates for this year were Robert Lowe, Jed Prettyman, Randy Slane, Ryan Slane, Kaeden Kulow, Dallen Garvin, Toby Prettyman for the boys. Relay alternates for the girl’s were Lacey Pugliese, Kenzie Mantz, Chrissy Cox, Megan Barnett, Kim Calloway, Jill Fincher, and Jenae Wilhelmi.
Cox knew that this in itself was a big step for the Dinos and she complimented those who made the alternate slots as well as the swimmers who competed in the meet. “We expect great things out of these swimmers next year! We did so well.”
