After losing a low scoring affair to Dixie a few nights ago, the Lady Dinos gave the crowd a small scare in the game against Uintah Tuesday night. In the end the Dinos got on track and easily defeated the Utes 51-27 to take their record to 7-3.
Neither team was able to get on the board for most of the first quarter. There was only four minutes left to play when Uintah finally got a bucket to drop. Carbon answered back on the next possession and finally the shots began to fall for both teams.
At the break, the Dino’s shifted from a man defense back to the full press they run so well. It was then the tempo of the game shifted and the Dino offense took over while the Dino defense shut down the Utes. Still by the half it was any ones game as Carbon only led by six.
But in the third Carbon took control of the game and the lead just continued to grow. Coach Carlson began to substitute liberally and make sure everyone got some playing minutes. With a lead of 41-19 going into the fourth, the bench took the floor. Uintah kept in their starters to try and make up some ground. A refreshed starting lineup for the Dinos came back in and played several minutes of the fourth to assure the win. The bench took over to finish up and guided the Dinos to a easy win over Uintah.
Three pointers were rare in the game as Carbon went inside to score most of their points. Megan Garvin led with 12 and Erika Potts added 11. The only three came late in the game from Samantha Smith. Erika Potts was 5-6 from the line.
Defensively Julia Potts, Garvin and Emily Cox pulled in six rebounds each. Britni Greenwood and Patricia Smith combined for eight of the team’s 14 steals.
“I wanted to try and see how our team could play straight up man coverage. I figured Uintah was a good team to try it out on and so that is how we started the game,” explained Carlson. “I found out quick that it wasn’t working and so we went back to the press. It suits our lineup and style of play. We control the tempo better and are more successful when we do.”
She went on to say, ” I did ask the girls to be honest with me about who was looking past this game to our Thursday rematch with Morgan. Four of them raised their hands. They are pretty excited about that game and plan to come out strong, but you just can’t look past anyone and play your best.”
The Thursday game against number one ranked Morgan will be the team’s second look at the top 3A team. When they went to Morgan earlier in the season, the Dinos cracked under Morgans press and lost big to them. They feel they are ready this time around.
Game time will be at 7 p.m. at the Carbon High gym on Dec. 20.
