Mitt Romney’s recent attempts to convince conservative Christians he has changed his position on abortion and is now a good choice for president, are convincing when one takes into account his dramatic break away from the Mormon church on the critical issue of abortion.
In the past Romney used the same deceptive lines as most pro-abortion politicians and the leaders of his church claiming he was personally against abortion, but also like his church, his official policies were always clearly pro-abortion.
For example president of the LDS church, Gordon B. Hinckley detailed the official position of his church on abortion; “While we denounce it , we make allowances in such circumstances as when pregnancy is the result of incest or rape, when the life or health of the mother is judged by competent medical authority to be in jeopardy, or when the fetus is known by competent medical authority to have serious defects.” (Official LDS publication ‘Ensign Nov. 1998 pg. 71)
The five cases mentioned by Mr. Hinckley (incest, rape, risk to life, risk to health, and deformity) are the exact same cases legalized by Roe vs. Wade and Doe vs. Bolton that’s why Romney has recently confessed that his church’s position is pro choice, not pro life. Romney clearly realized he could never gain the support of conservative Christians if he upheld the LDS churches position on abortion, for it is a position which has resulted in the brutal deaths of millions of helpless innocent children and is opposed by all pro life churches, organizations and people.
Mitt Romney claims he was converted away from these allowances and now opposes these abortions, and would support a Constitutional Amendment banning them.
Romney’s conversion is good news to Christians who believe a small child in the womb should be loved as we love ourselves.
I hope the leaders of the LDS church seriously consider following Romney’s lead.
