A gentle push and a swoosh as Megan Garvin hit one of her five threes in Carbon’s donminating win over Bear River on Thursday

The Lady Dinos set a high bar for themselves this season and that means taking on tough teams in the pre-season to get ready for the region play. After getting drilled by number one ranked Wasatch, the team came back on a mission and returned the favor to an unsuspecting Bear River 73-41 on Thursday night. The Dinos then went toe-to-toe with a tough Canyonview squad and lost a last second heart breaker 36-37 on Saturday night at the BDAC.
Thursday the team needed to aton for its play on Tuesday. They were on fire from the start. The only part of the game Bear River controlled was the tip-off. After that, Carbon ran, shot, fought and stole their way to an easy victory. The outcome of the game was evident by the half-time break.
Megan Garvin went 5-7 from downtown and had 17 points on the night. Julia Potts went inside for a lot of her 17 points to match Garvin’s total. Patricia Smith dished out six assists and her sister had five.
The cold and stormy weather on Saturday was mirrored by the tempo inside the BDAC when Carbon and Canyonview took the court. Each team knew it was in for a fight and neither team wanted to give their opponent the edge.
As a result the play was tentative and even a bit timid from the Dinos as they moved the ball without anyone wanting to take a shot. The Falcons also seemed shy about shooting and for most of the game defense ruled. Carbon only took 14 shots the entire first half.
The Falcons had a bit better outside shooting and had the lead throughout the contest. Each time it looked like Canyonview was going to runaway with the game, Carbon shook off the dust and pulled right back in it. Dino confidence grew as the game went along and finally shots were falling. As time was running out, the Dinos began to take quicker shots and they continued to fall.
Trailing by five in the final few seconds of the game, the team hit a quick shot and the forced a turnover. Needing a three to tie it, they had to settle for a lay-up by Erika Potts. With .5 left on the clock, Canyonview inbounded then lost control.

Erika Potts gets mugged as she goes up for a shot during the Lady Dinos loss against Canyonview on Saturday night. Potts went to the line eight times in the game playing tough all night for her team.

The final shot by the Dinos just missed and they could say the same about the game.
Julia Potts was the only Dino in double figures with 10. Patricia Smith had eight including one three pointer. Her sister Samantha also hit a three. Erika Potts was just about the only Dino to get to the free throw line and she was 5-8 from the line.
Coach Cami Carlson knew the Saturday game would be tough.”The girls felt that every possession against Canyonview would be critical and none of them wanted to be the one to take the bad shot and give up the ball. They didn’t play their own game until too late. It just wasn’t soon enough to get them the win.”
The team travels east this weekend to play in Grand Junction, Colo. It will be good for the squad to take on some tough teams and fresh faces.
