Letter to the Editor: Fairy tales more logical

By Sun Advocate

Editor:
The Land of Oz, that mystical place where dreams often come true if only one wishes hard enough. But it appears more often than naught that events transpiring around us oftentimes squelch those dreams and we are forced to live in the present.
The end of the rainbow supposedly leads to a pot of gold that never seems to be empty for those of means such as the elite, rich and famous, or those of political status or CEO’s of large corporations who are rewarded for deleting their workforce. The pot that materializes for the rest of us appears to be a vessel overflowing with debt, medical bills, foreclosures, increased taxes, and more dangerous imports ensuring that “The end of the rainbow” is just another fantasy.
Those of means look at the world through rose-colored glasses and say everything looks bright and clear for a “rosy” economy while the rest of us tend to see the world through shattered spectacles to view broken dreams, increased costs, lower wages, continual wars and misrepresentation from those in power.
Even the Seven Dwarfs are not as they appear in the popular fairy tale; that of happy little creatures singing on their way home from a long day’s work, content that a nice hot meal awaits their arrival. Today’s Doc is a fella who is losing his patients because of insufficient medical coverage along with high premiums. Who can blame Grumpy for his dour temperament? He long ago decided his labor was no longer appreciated. Sleepy, on the other hand, would much rather spend time with his head under the covers than contend with all of the problems looming in the world. The sweet little guy, Dopey, will remain as is unless he and his friends get the education he deserves by giving his hard-working teachers the recognition they earn. Bashful has long ago lost his innocence by viewing the x-rated movies and barrage of indecent language constantly exhibited. Sneezy, after a long day’s work went outdoors for a breath of fresh air and found a noxious cloud that sent him indoors with a hacking cough that he now has to deal with along with his continual sneezing. Happy, is just that – happy to return to the land of make believe and fairy tales that has nothing to do with modern life. Snow White, our fairy tale princess will not be poisoned by the devious witch and her poisoned apple, as we’ve been led to believe, but by one that has been imported from “Somewhere over the ocean”.
What might be the fairy tale ending to our survival? Perhaps we could wrap ourselves in a cocoon to be picked off the vine by someone who will do the job we no longer will do; placed on a cargo ship to China for fine processing; forwarded to India in the form of silk or cotton yarn where we’ll be woven into magic carpets in various colors and hues and re-imported to America through un-inspected ports and sold for cents on the dollar to the moneyed. They will then be able to survey their domain from the luxury of their flying crafts for they too can no longer afford the high cost of gas.
Perhaps believing in fairy tales is a much more logical solution to our many problems than hoping to one day get responsible representation.
