County clerk’s office announces voter registration deadline, balloting dates

Carbon residents may register to vote in the upcoming election at the county clerk’s office through Oct. 22.
Residents must complete the voter registration process via visiting the office in person, pointed out deputy county clerk Alexis Horsley.
In addition to announcing the registration deadline, Horsley indicated that local voters may start casting early 2007 election ballots at the county clerk’s office on Oct. 23. Located in the Carbon County Courthouse on Main Street in Price, the office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
The early voting process will conclude on Nov. 2, the Friday prior to election day, explained Horsley.

Hazmat crew members respond to acid leak in lab at Mont Harmon Junior High

Carbon School District, working in conjunction with county Hazmat and Price fire officials, resolved an acid leak report on Tuesday at Mont Harmon Junior High.
The incident involved a bottle of acid stored in the science department at Mont Harmon. Acting on Hazmat advice, district officials evacuated guests and students who had gathered for a band concert at the school.
County emergency preparedness director Jason Llewelyn conducted tests on the bottle, verified the results and contacted the company that disposes of similar materials.
At no time were students, guests or the public placed in harms way. The band concert will be rescheduled at a later date.

Joint East Carbon-Sunnyside Public Safety board meets with commissioner Milovich

Plans for the proposed joint public safety building are moving forward for Sunnyside and East Carbon, according to Sunnyside city officials.
The city council discussed a Oct. 12 board meeting which Carbon County Commissioner Mike Milovich attended during Sunnyside’s regular council meeting on Oct. 16.
The council reported that Milovich aided in working out the details of fire contracts that will assist the cities in paying the loan portion of their $1.9 million total construction costs.
The council also assured residents at the meeting that there would be ample time to conduct a public bond hearing before the next CIB funding session on Dec. 3.
