Brittney Gustas and Britni Greenwood go down for one of the impressive 53 defensive digs by the Dinos in their win against North Sanpete

“Wow, that was some impressive Volleyball!” was the comment heard over and over as people came over after the match against North Sanpete on Tuesday night to congratulate Coach Cristen Johnson and her team. The Carbon Dinos faced one of their toughest region opponents and beat them in an impressive three straight games. Scores for the match were 25-18, 25-18, 25-21.
The Dinos led game one from start to finish. They played strong and decisive ball. The Hawks are not a team to take lightly and they tried to match the Dinos intensity, but just could not overcome the strong offense that Carbon put up.
Game two was a bit more of an even match as the Hawks scored first and the game stayed nip and tuck through out most of the game. But, just like turning on a switch, as soon as the Dinos hit 20 points, they smelled victory and ratcheted up their play to put the game to bed.
Game three was much like the second. Each team stepped up their level of play. The Hawks trying to get back in the match, the Dinos trying to finish off the sweep. Several times in the game the rallies were like an epic battle in themselves. Digs, saves and attempted kill shots went back and forth while the crowd held their breath. In the end it was the Dinos who were able to take their game to the next level and walk away with the win.

Megan Garvin finishes off the Carbon sweep with a kill.

Megan Gavin continued her dominance at the net with another 16 kills. Britni Greenwood had ten. The defense was impressive as Garvin had 15 defensive digs, Whitney Oliver had 12 and Erika Potts and Brittney Gustas had nine. Julia Potts again ran the offense with 29 set assists. Oliver added three service aces to her stats and Garvin had two on the night.
“Anytime you can beat North Sanpete is a great win. North Sanpete has a great team.” Johnson declared right after the game wearing a big smile. This was again the best volleyball they played so far this year. It was a good win!” Carbon is now 2-0 in region play and ranked in the top three in all of 3A. Their overall record stands at 14-5.
The team will go down and take on Emery on Thursday. Any time those two teams meet, it ends up to be an intense rivalry. Game time for Thursday’s match-up is 6:30 p.m. at the Emery High gym.
