Carbon sweeps Ben Lamond

The Dinos wanted to go into region eight play hitting on all cylinders and it looks like they will do just that as they wrapped up pre-season play with an impressive win over Ben Lomand on Tuesday September 11. In three straight games they put the Scots away 25-19, 25-20 and 25-13.
Game one saw the Dinos jump out quick, but Ben Lomand climbed back in and kept the game close.
In game two, it was more of the same. Ben Lomand scored first, but Carbon moved into a strong lead, only to let it slip away.
It was again nip and tuck until the final few points.
Coach Cristen Johnson told her team that for the final game she wanted to see the best play they had and they stepped it up to the next level.
After letting the Scots score on their first serve, the Dinos shut them down with a 7-0 run. Each time Ben Lomand got the serve, Carbon took it back almost immediately to make short work of the final game.
Julia Potts had 26 assists in the match. Megan Garvin was on track with 10 kills. Britni Greenwood added nine and Joy Malone stepped up her play with seven.
Coach Johnson was very impressed with what she saw from her team, especially in the final game.
She pointed out that that she was really pleased with sophomore Joy Malone’s play.
“When I needed her to step up into the middle position, she has done what was asked and played great.” she also pointed out.
“When we play these teams that should not give us any trouble, we tend to stoop to their level. I asked them to show me their best play for the final game and they did just that.”
Over the weekend the JV squad hosted a tournament at Carbon High.
They won their own tournament in grand style as they went 8-0. The sophomore team took second in their tournament.
The future of the Carbon volleyball program remains solid through the next few years if the current crop of players remain in the game.
The Dinos travel to Delta next Thursday, Sept. 20 for their first region match-up.
