The Mead Ranch, Bed and Breakfast, was hit by two major flash floods recently.
On Aug. 28, a huge flood came out of Sulfur Canyon and destroyed the Mead dam site, putting tons of mud and debris in the head gate, and ditch. A monster tree was laid over the ditch about 75 yards down from the dam. Numerous boulders were deposited in the head gate. A small pasture below was littered with rock, wood and destruction.
The flood also removed the chicken coup, taking with it a keg of new nails, new chicken wire, tools, etc. that Ben Mead was using to repair the coop in preparation for the winter. Their fowl have been hit heavy this past summer by coyotes and fox.
The second flood came a week later on September 4. This flood came out of a smaller canyon to the east of Sulfur, and made a direct hit on their home site, parking area, corrals and haystack.
What is needed from Carbon County communities, friends of the Meads, Nine Mile Canyon users and enthusiasts are the following to help the ranch recover from this disaster.
•Hundreds of hours of manpower, wheelbarrows, rakes and shovels to remove mud and debris.
•Donations and labor to restore corrals, a shelter for animals, a chicken coop and stack yard, (preferably with protection for new hay).
•Cleanup and restoration of cabins in the campground area and the basement of the new dwelling. Mud needs to be removed from around the buildings. Insidcs of buildings need to be restored.
The Nine Mile Canyon Settlers Association needs organized groups of helpers to bring their wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes and strong backs to remove mud and debris. Also builders (carpenters for sheds, corral restoration etc.) are needed.

Donations may be deposited at the Eastern Utah Community Credit Union, in the account of Nine Mile Canyon Settlers Association, or mailed to Kirt Rich, 887 North 5th East, Price, Utah. 84501. All donations will be receipted in the donor’s name, unless otherwise specified.
Donations of lumber, corral poles, posts, building supplies, etc, may be made at the ranch directly to Ben and Myrna Mead.
Ben and Myma Mead have spent years of time, effort and money to create a place for visitors to Nine Mile. The community now has a place to camp with their family and friends.
