Carbon Cross County traveled to Moab on Sept. 1 and although not everyone could make the trip the team had a strong showing in the blistering heat.
“The temperature was hot but so were our athletes,” commented Carbon Coach Stew Foster. “Because of the long holiday not everyone could make the trip but everyone who did really improved their time.”
In the varsity division Jared Richens placed third, Robert Lowe took ninth and Andrew Bates came in tenth. In the junior varsity group James Bates took fourth, Preston Grant was on his heels in fifth and Kaleb Kulow crossed the finish line in tenth.
“Patricia Smith was in third place and coming on strong with a half mile to go,” explained Foster. “But with a half mile to go she got lost on the course. She probably would have taken first or second had she not taken the wrong turn. We are looking forward to great things from Patricia as the season progresses.”
Foster reported that Smith has been a very strong spring runner competing in the 800 meter for Carbon Track. This is her first year running cross country and she is improving with every competition. This being her first time running the Moab course could have led to her wrong turn. The cross country team’s next meet will be on Sept. 5 against Emery High.
