Principal Greg Stanfield may be new to the local area, but he is not a stranger to some of the faces at Carbon High. Stanfield has been an educator for 26 years.
He taught and coached for 21 of years and has been in administration ever since.
During his tenure as a teacher and coach, Stansfield worked at Grantsville and his teams played against Carbon High on many occasions. He liked the community back then and still does.
The last place he called home was in Oshkosh, Neb. Genie, his wife, and his youngest son made the move to Carbon County with him.
Stanfield’s youngest son will attend Carbon High as a sophomore. He also has a son and daughter in Provo as well as two grandchildren living there. He has a son in college at eastern Wyoming as well.
The CHS principal is excited to be back in Utah, closer to his children and grandchildren.
Stanfield attended college in Dixie and BYU before going on to Southern Utah University to complete his masters. His desire to return to Utah led him to apply for the Carbon position as well as the same job in Grantsville. Carbon offered him the job first and he jumped at the opportunity.
Coach Ted Bianco and Jeff Jorgenson were two familiar faces that greeted him from his past coaching days. He is eager to get started and is looking to raise the bar for students attending Carbon High this year.
A major focus will be to reward and encourage the good things the students are doing each and every day. Teachers will have Dino Cards that they will be giving students for good behaviors and outstanding work. These cards will be put in a box for a weekly drawing for prizes. Stanfield hopes the community will participate with donations for this program.
The student of the month program will be re-emphasized with better recognition to the students that are spotlighted. There will also be “Above and Beyond” awards given for students that excel in something special.
The pupils who achieve the GPA to make the honor roll will also see more recognition than in the past. Students will get certificates for each semester they are on the honor roll. If they make it three out of four times they will receive a medal at the end of the year. Each level has its own acknowledgment, topping off with platinum for a 4.0 GPA.
With increases recognition also comes increases expectations. Stanfield and the faculty will be asking more responsibility and accountability from each and every student this year. He is looking to turn Carbon High into a community of learners. In athletics, sportsmanship will be number one. The Dinos will be able to win with dignity and lose with class.
He wants to stress to all parents of a Carbon High student to read the manual they bring home so they can be aware of the changes. All parents will be required to sign in and get a visitor pass this year. Safety of the school will be tantamount but he wants it to be an inviting place for all to come.
Most of all Stanfield wants to recognize the work the faculty has put in this summer preparing for the year. The custodial staff has also gone above and beyond as they have worked hard to spruce up the school so the community can look to our high school with pride. He wants to also commend the clerical staff who has had to deal with the extra headaches of a changing administration as well as the usual craziness associated with each new school year.
The energy and attitude that Stanfield has brought to Carbon High is evident all through the building. Signs and posters reinforcing the theme of respect and responsibility are all over the school. The public will see the student body involved with activities designed to give back to the community, like food drives. He is looking forward to preparing his charges to be well educated and responsible citizens as they move beyond their high school days.
