With a small hint of fall hanging in the air last Friday night, the Carbon High football team kicked off its season with the annual blue and white football scrimmage.
The game gives the fans a chance to see the squad for the first time as they run through simulated game experiences.
After several disappointing seasons and the third coaching turnover in three years, fans were excited to see what the team had in store for them this season.
Coach Tiller did not have the team play a traditional scrimmage game, but ran a series of 25 plays in a row for first the white offense and then the blue.
This was an intense way to showcase the team while limiting the risk of early season injuries that hurt last year’s team.
Tiller saw a lot of positive in the execution on the field, but also expressed some disappointment in a few areas as well. He felt like the kids played well, tackled hard, and physically put it all out on the field. His frustration came with some of the kids that he felt didn’t play within the system. “They weren’t disciplined to the position” he stated.
In his eyes these are very correctable problems that the team will be focusing on this week. The other area was that many of the squad were playing a little uptight instead of playing to the ball. He chalks this up to mostly pre-season jitters that will resolve as the season gets underway.
He was pleased with the difference he saw on the field that he attributes to the strength program the kids have been participating in all summer long.
In Tillers assessment he gave his team a solid C for the performance on Friday night.
He has received some good feedback from the community, liking what they saw on Friday night, already. He can’t thank the parents, community and businesses enough for the support he has gotten so far this season. He knows this will be a rebuilding year and anything can happen.
If his kids will stay with the system and play to protect, they are going to see success.
Next week they head to Spanish Fork to take on American Leadership Academy.
Last season, ALA beat Carbon by a point for their closest game of the season.
The Dinos are hoping to even the score with a victory. Game time will be at 7 p.m.
