JD Sherman is congratulated by team mates after a homerun in an earlier game against Murray. Helper took down Beaver 9-8 in their last game. |
Helper American Legion baseball season is winding down, but the boys of summer are not letting up on their good play. Saturday the team took on Beaver.
Brett Johnson took the mound and pitched a complete game for the Helper squad. He had solid pitching while Beaver’s pitcher really struggled, walking 10 batters the first three innings.
All of Helper’s runs came via the walk for the first three innings. Going into the fifth they led 5-1. Things began to look bad for the Helper squad as they let Beaver take the lead with six runs. Beaver went on top 7-5.
Helper took back the momentum and scored three runs in sixth inning to regain a 8-7 lead.
Beaver scored a run in the top of the 7th to tie the score. Finishing up the seesaw affair, Helper then scored a run in the bottom of the 7th to win the game 9-8.
JD Sherman had the game winning hit. Marcus Zaccaria had the biggest hit of the day in the 6th inning. With two outs and runners on second and third he came through with a big single to score two runs in which Helper regained their lead.
The team will play Smithfield Monday Aug. 6 at 4 p.m. in Kearns.
