Katherine Tomadakis


PRICE – Our loving mother, grandmother and dear friend, Katherine Douros Tomadakis, age 92, passed away Friday, July 6, 2007, in Price.
She was born Nov. 26, 1914 in Cainsville, Mo., to George and Mary Dawson Douros. Married Bill P. Tomadakis Sept. 5, 1936 in Price; he passed away on Feb. 12, 1973.
Katherine was a member of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church.
She was a longtime resident of Carbon County and an active member of the Carbon County Senior Citizens, where she helped with the monthly paper.
She was formerly employed with Slaugh’s Nursery, Gambles and Red Balloon.
She enjoyed making ceramics, embroidering gifts and making many afghans for family and friends.
She loved working in her yard, gardening and canning.
She was always busy and loved to read.
She will be dearly missed by her family and a community of friends.
Survived by three sons, John W. (Donna) Tomadakis, Price; Peter (Rowena) Tomadakis, Spanish Fork; George (Bea) Tomadakis, Halifax, N.C.; eight loving grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Preceded in death by parents, two brothers and four sisters.
Funeral service Wednesday, July 11, 11 a.m., Assumption Greek Orthodox Church. Trisagion service Tuesday evening, 7 p.m., Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s Tuesday and Wednesday one hour prior to services. Interment, Price City Cemetery.


Jay Jeffs


CASTLE DALE – Jay Jeffs passed away on July 7, 2007.
He was born March 18, 1953 in Price to Archie Jeffs and Stella Anderson Jeffs Reid. He was the youngest of three boys. He married JoAnn Hansen and had four girls.
He graduated from Emery High and Salt Lake Community College.
Jay loved to work. He was a miner for American Coal. He was the fireboss at DesBee Dove mine. He was also the faceboss, shift foreman, surface foreman and underground construction foreman at Wilberg mine. He then went to Nielson Construction as a heavy equipment operator.
All who knew Jay can attest to his great sense of humor. There was always fun to be had when Jay was around.
He also had an overwhelming love for his girls. He instilled in them his great love for the desert, for his horses and other animals.
He loved to work, and he had fun in everything he did.
Jay is survived by wife; girls, Jodi (Russ) Wilson of Ferron; Jamie (James) Huggard of Mona; Jasa (Jared) Norton of Castle Dale; and Jana (Kyle) Larsen of Cleveland. He is also survived by mom; brothers, Lee (Pam) Jeffs of Castle Dale; Ray (Teresa) Jeffs of Orangeville; brothers-in-law, Kirk Hansen of Cleveland, Hans (Jacklyn) Hansen of Elmo; sister-in-law, Lori (Ben) Brady of Elmo; mother- and father-in-law, Darold and Henrietta Hansen of Elmo; grandpa Jay’s little buckaroos and biggest fans, Devin, Colton, Abby, Bailey, Wade, Chase, Tylee, Kelsey and Kade; and stepsisters, Marie Jensen and Annette Winder. Jay was preceded in death by dad; grandmother, Sarah Anderson; and stepdad, Ed Reid.
Services will be Thursday, July 12 at 11 a.m. at Castle Dale LDS Stake Center. A viewing will take place Wednesday, July 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Castle Dale and one hour prior to service. Interment, Castle Dale cemetery.


Theressa Frandsen


PRICE – Theressa O. Frandsen passed away July 3, 2007, one day after her 88th birthday, at her home in Price surrounded by her family.
She was born in Ferron on July 2, 1919, one of seven children of James L. and Ruth Oviatt. The Oviatt family was raised in Emery County and Hiawatha, with the majority of their family life being centered in Price.
Theressa married Garth Frandsen and, together, they raised Laurel (Robert) Browning of Alpine, and Neil (Bonnie) Frandsen of Price. Garth and Theressa’s son, Ralph, died early in life at the age of 21.
Garth and Theressa’s life was centered around their family, their church and the Price community.
Garth and Theressa were sealed in the Manti LDS Temple. Together, they owned and operated Mountain View Landscaping and Nursery.
Theressa ran a catering business, serving the needs of eastern Utah for over 20 years. Theressa claims that, during the years of catering weddings and family events, she baked more than 80,000 cakes and sandwiches and prepared untold gallons of punch.
Theressa checked the census records and discovered that there were numerous children in Price with special needs that were not being schooled. She was instrumental in starting a school for these children.
Theressa and Garth would wake up on cold winter mornings at 4 a.m. to start a fire and make sure the little house that served as the school for their son, Ralph, and his classmates was warm and comfortable. This school was later named the Ann Self School and then was named the Castle Valley Center.
Theressa served several terms as a member of the Price City Council and was the first woman to be elected to the council. One of her responsibilities on the council was the beautification of the city and its streets. The city won many state awards for her efforts in this area. She was selected as Woman of the Year for Price on one occasion and, in 2004, she was selected as Woman of Achievement in Carbon County. Later that year, she was awarded Utah State Woman of Achievement.
Theressa and Garth served several years as workers in the Manti LDS Temple. She was ward organist for years in the Price lst LDS Ward. She served as ward and stake Relief sSciety president.
She and her family took every opportunity for gatherings and holidays at the family cabin in Scofield. They loved the mountains and the desert of eastern Utah.
She is survived by son, Neil; daughter, Laurel; brother, Theron Oviatt; and sisters, Lucille Judi, Myra Ricks and Kathryn Pierce. She has eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren who rise up and call her blessed.
Funeral services were Monday, July 9, at the Price 6th LDS Ward Chapel under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.


Shirley Franklin Melo


GUSHER – Shirley Franklin Melo, age 70 of Gusher, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2007 at her home.
She was born in Price to Andrew Noah and Ina Suzanna Jensen Franklin. She married John Melo on Aug. 6, 1950 in Tacoma, Wash. He died March 16, 2001.
Shirley loved being with her family. All of her fishing, hunting and camping trips were with them.
She enjoyed gardening, quilting, crocheting and going on trips to Mesquite, Nev.
She liked most of all barbecues and times spent with her grandchildren.
She volunteered at the local food pantries.
She is survived by children, Kathy (Wes) Twitchell, Gusher; John (Diane) Melo, Price; Steven (Joanna) Melo, Altamont; Donald (Nola) Melo, Gusher; adopted son, Paul (Leitha) Giacoletto; 22 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren; brother, James Andrew (Fay) Franklin, Huntington; and sister, Betty Christianson, Roosevelt. She was preceded in death by husband, John; son, Ron; daughter, Kay; grandson, John “Johnny” Melo; and four sisters.
Graveside services were Monday, July 9, at Cleveland City Cemetery under the direction of Hullinger Mortuary.


Ann Kane


GREEN RIVER – Our dearest mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend “MiMi,” Ann Marie Kane, age 52, passed away at home in Green River on July 6, 2007 while surrounded by her loved ones after a long hard fight with cancer.
She was born on Sept. 24, 1954 to Gerard Frances and Ann Marie Mulvany Kane in Bronx, N.Y.
Until recently MiMi resided in White Plains, N.Y., where she worked in the commercial air condition business.
Two and a half years ago, she came west to be with her family.
Her passion and joy in life was her only daughter, Shannon, and her sweet grandson, Gavin, the light of her life.
MiMi had a strong faith and was a member of the Catholic Church.
She loved cooking for her family and friends just as much as her family and friends enjoyed the feasts she prepared.
She was a great inspiration to her nieces and nephews, and she loved encouraging them and watching their achievements. She made each one feel special and important.
She was a kind hearted person who loved everyone and that love was returned.
MiMi will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survived by daughter, Shannon Kane; grandson, Gavin, of Hanford, Calif.; five sisters and one brother, Cathy (Bob) Gardner, Claire (Walt) Maldonado, Rita (Greg) Vetere, all of Green River; Jennifer (Tracy) Spadafora, Laura Kane, both of Las Vegas, Nev.; Jerry (Audrea) Kane, Deer Park, Wash.; nine loving nieces and nine nephews.
Funeral service, Tuesday, July 10, 10 a.m., Green River Bible Church under the arrangements of Mitchell Funeral Home of Price.
