At the May 16 commission meeting, Miss Carbon County director Amy Rasmussen addressed the lawmakers regarding local government’s involvement and support for the scholarship program.
Rasmussen explained to the commissioners how important the county’s continued support in the future will be to the program.
Rasmussen indicated that the program would like to see the reigning Miss Carbon County have more opportunity to serve the community.
The director also hoped that the program could receive more respect and recognition and be valued more by the community.
The program is in place to encourage young women who have made outstanding contributions in the community.
The program is designed to encourage the spirit of volunteerism with civic projects in the Carbon County area and extend the benefits of the Miss America Scholarship Pageant by providing scholarships to local colleges.
The program also includes the Outstanding Teen and Little Miss Carbon County mentoring programs.
The programs provide a great opportunity for positive role modeling in the area, said Rasmussen.
Miss Carbon County is one of the only programs in the area that the young girls have to look forward to and get involved with, added the director.
The past few years, the number of contestants has not been as high as the program organizers would like to see, noted Rasmussen.
However, participation in the pageant has been increasing.
A couple of years ago, Miss Carbon County had eight contestants.
But according to Rasmussen, 18 perspective girls are expected to compete for the title in 2007.
Reigning Miss Carbon County Danielle Olsen has been pretty busy, said Rasmussen.
Olsen has been donating time to the Adopt a Neighbor Program.
The outreach program is dedicated to connecting with senior citizens in the area who are in need of social outlets.
Olsen has donated more than 14,112 hours to the cause.
Commissioner Mike Milovich suggested that Olsen’s time would be well spent and appreciated at the Carbon County Children’s Justice Center.
Other suggestions from the commission included working with the Lighthouse program and possibly assisting at the women’s shelter.
Commissioner Bill Krompel pointed out that Miss Carbon County may enjoy becoming involved with the 4th of July activities and the demolition derby.
Rasmussen said Olsen is outgoing and ready for new adventures.
The Miss Utah Pageant will be presented June 24 to June 30 at the Capital Theater in Salt Lake City.
Rasmussen encouraged the commissioners to attend the state pageant.
