Traveling through a spring blizzard, Coach Moynier got a call on his cell phone as they were 10 minutes away from Delta canceling the game. They decided to go and see if they could get the game in anyway. After an hour delay to work over the lake the infield had become, the game got underway. For Carbon the game mattered more for pride than anything. For Delta, it was their last shot to make the play-offs.
The Dinos failed to finish off the Delta Rabbits in a 10-12 loss. Sitting securely in second place in the standings, the Dinos wrapped up regular season play with the road loss in which Carbon had a nine run sixth and then failed to hold onto the lead.
Kyle Asay had a rocky start as the Rabbits exploded with six runs to jump out to a big lead in the first. Tyler Turcasso came in to pitch and Carbon settled down to hold Delta scoreless for the next five innings. Not known for his strike out ability, Turcasso set down 10 Delta batters. At one point he had five K’s in a row.
In the fifth the Dinos started to whittle away at the deficit with a run. As in many of their games this season , it was a late game explosion of offense that put the Dinos back in control. It looked like another Carbon win as they ran over the Rabbits with nine runs to take a 10-6 lead going into the bottom of the sixth. But Delta had some pop of their own and matched their first inning production with six more runs to take back the lead. Brady Wilde was unable to get the outs needed and Jordan Moynier finished off the game. The Dinos failed to move a runner across in the seventh and went down to defeat.
JJ Blue Kyle Asay and Jordan Moynier each had a two bagger in the game as the Dinos scored their 10 runs on 10 hits. The seniors on the team were angry at their late game let down. “Even though it was a meaningless game for us, they wanted to win. I told them that they could have Friday off because I was tied up with the JV tournament and they decided they would hold their own practice. If that isn’t leadership, I don’t know what is,” Coach Moynier reflected. “I am pleased with these kids, especially the seniors as they have banded together to unite this team despite the rocky start.”
The Dinos enter the post season tournament as the second seed in region eight. They head to Dixie and will take on either Logan or Grantsville. Those two teams are tied for the second seed. Carbon will play the third seed from that region.
