On Friday, April 20 the Carbon high track team traveled to Uintah to compete in the Uintah Invitational. Carbon showed continuing improvement as they get closer to region with the girls squad placing third and the boys tying for first.
“The girls and boys both had a great meet,” said Carbon coach Jimmy Jewkes.
For the girls, Patricia Smith placed first in the 800 meters with her sister Samantha placing third. Tiz Smith took fifth in the 3200 meter run and Brenda Davis placed third in the discuss.
Ericka Potts took home fourth in the shotput and in the high jump Megan Garvin placed third with Britney Greenwood in fourth and Chantel Jensen in fifth.
The boys scored 132 points to finish tied with Duchesne for the title.
“Paul Goodrich was standout at this meet,” commented Jewkes. “He had a lot to do with our placing at the tournament.”
Goodrich won the race and qualified for state in the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:59.57. Goodrich also placed first in the 1600 meter and second in the 800 meter run. Kent Olson placed second in the 3200 meter and third in the 800 meter.
Travis Hepworth placed first in the 300 meter hurdles and fourth in the 110 meter hurdles as well as placing fourth in the high jump. James McKendrick placed second in the javelin competition and Brock Morley placed third in the 110 meter hurdles with Jed Prettyman placing third in the high jump.
“This meet put us up against some great competition with Rangely, Emery, Uintah, Union and 1A state champion Duchesne. I was pleased with the effort of our kids. We have come a long way since our first meet,” said Jewkes. “Both teams are looking great. We don’t just have outstanding athletes we have some great kids and that makes the difference in the attitude of the team,” concluded that Carbon High coach.
