While the Cleveland Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry was reopened after over a year long remodel in late March, it’s actual dedication will take place at the site on Saturday, April 28.
The quarry, known for 70 years for it’s diversity of dinosaur fossils, has undergone a true facelift with new displays.
“Easter weekend at Cleveland Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry saw more than 400 visitors to the newly remodeled facility,” said Wayne Ludington of the Price Bureau of Land Management. Ludington was speaking to the Emery County Public Lands Council at their April meeting.
Ludington said the BLM is happy to have Cleveland Lloyd open again. He said the rededication program will begin at 11 a.m. Many local people have never been to the quarry and this would be an ideal time to go.
“Easter weekend went well and the reports we have received have all been good,” stated Ludington.
Once the dedication has been done, the quarry will remain open during the tourist season with regular a hours so that visitors can see the ancient remains of dinosaurs and how they are extracted from the ground.
Ludington also announced the BLMs plans to expand the San Rafael campground near the Swinging Bridge.
“We are moving into the planning stages of this project. We would like to expand the campground to the other side of the river to protect the large cottonwood trees in the area,” he stated.
Paul Birdsey of the Division of Wildlife Resources informed the council of the Division’s intent to do restoration work on the San Rafael River.
“I will have a complete presentation in the near future. We will begin to do spring samplings on the river,” said Birdsey.
Brian Torgersen from the School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration explained an application for a lease of some of SITLA’s property east of Green River.
“This lease is to utilize the railroad spur on the property,” said Torgersen.
He also stated that the permit for a quarry in the Molen Seeps Wash area east of Ferron has been renewed.
SITLA will hold a land sale on May 11 at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City.
