Christina Powell stands on top of the pyramid during the state competition.

The Carbon cheerleaders traveled to the first ever state cheerleading competition at Lone Peak High school on March 8 and came away with a fourth place finish in the 3A division.
“Anyone who thinks that cheerleading is not a sport needed to be at this competition,” stated Trish Anderson, Carbon High cheer coach. “Anyone could see that these girls are in great shape and very athletic.”
The Utah Cheer Coaches Association surveyed coaches across the state and found that there was a universal want for a statewide competition. The event also took the time to recognize cheerleaders with high grade point averages.
Carbon had three cheerleaders that were recognized for academic excellence, Julia Breinholt, Michelle Montoya and Mikka Pendergrass. Carbon cheer has an overall GPA of 3.72 percent.
