Letter to the Editor: Come and talk to us

This letter is in response to the comments published in the Sun Advocate on Feb. 13 by Andy Barnett concerning Carbon County Recreation.
I would like to first say how wonderful it is to have a community that supports and puts in the volunteer effort they do. Many are dedicated people who have a passion for these sports, and you step up and help. Because of you the programs we offer are less expensive, and better then other programs around this state.
Many community members have great interest in the programs we offer, and we are always interested in listening, and improving anything we do. If you have ideas or comments about a program please feel free to sit down with us and talk about it. I am also asking the community if there are those out there that have skills in any of these areas to step up and give something back to the community, and help run these programs. More then anything we need more community involvement in the 90 plus programs we offer.
We ask for this help and also ask parents and community members alike to understand that every kid in this county is entitled to learn, and play in all area recreational programs, no matter what their skill level or interests may be. This is why competition is not a big part of what we do.
I also am asking that parents stop verbally assaulting our coaching and officiating staff, because many of them are stepping up to do these jobs to better the community. If people are looking for more competitive organizations then they should invest in raising a private program that focuses on that. We do not discriminate or arrange teams based on skill level.
I am also asking the community to put on our shoes and walk around for a minute. We will do everything possible to help improve a program. Don’t approach the subject in a commission meeting or write letters to the editor when we can fix a problem through conversation. Furthermore don’t approach any problems that you yourself would not be willing to help resolve.
I feel there are much greater issues to be discussed in a commission meeting or in letters to the editor in regards to recreation, than the problems about a small sports program. For example a recreation center, or a refrigerated ice skating rink.
My promise to the community is that if you get involved in these programs and help make them better, you and the community alike will feel better about this wonderful place we live, and the awesome opportunities we have to recreate.
