The right bait and lures are all important when fishing, winter or summer.t |
•Abajo Mountains. No report.
•Huntington Creek. Try a number 12 beadhead Montana nymph, drifted along the bottom.
•Huntington North State Park. Work has begun on the dam gates and new spillway. Water levels will remain low until the work is completed in April. No report on fishing success.
•Mammoth Reservoir. Fishing success has been sporadic, ranging from slow to fair. Try a chartreuse or white jig, tipped with a nightcrawler and salmon egg, fished 12 inches off the bottom. Bring a snow shovel and plan to auger at least 2.5 feet through the ice. Tiger trout range from 12-17 inches. Closed to the possession of cutthroat trout.
•Joes Valley Reservoir. Fishing success ranges from slow to fair. The catch consists mostly of splake that generally fall under or within the slot limit. Tiger and cutthroat trout may also be caught. Small spoons or jigs tipped with chub meat are recommended. Special regulations apply. Please refer to the 2007 fishing guide.
•Lake Powell. Water temperature crept back into the 50’s following a few warm windless afternoons, but there is much more warming needed to really get fish going. Right now game fish are feeding sporadically. Catching is hit and miss.
The best choice of fishing location is near aquatic weed beds and tumbleweed piles that are near deep water. Bass and stripers are holding quite consistently at 30 foot depths. They come shallower to feed and drop back over the ledge to rest. Find a spot with cover and deep water in near proximity and chances of finding willing fish increases. Good coves with lots of cover in the backs of shallow canyons will not be occupied until water warms to 57-60 degrees. This week look for cover on the edge of deep water for best results.
Tumbleweed piles are not forgiving when crankbaits or spoons get tangled in the branches. Weedless lures are a necessity and slow movement is the best presentation. Spinner baits fill the need as do suspending crankbaits – if the bait can be fishing along the brush tops instead of in the middle where snags await. Weedless baits like texas-rigged senkos with no weight are perhaps the best lures to settle into the weed pockets without hanging up.
Lasal Mountains Kens Lake has thawed. Brown trout range from 12-15 inches. Mountain reservoirs remain frozen and inaccessible.
Lower Fish Creek Try a #12 San Juan Worm, #14 Prince Nymph, or #12 green scud in open water below the dam.
Scofield Reservoir Fishing success has been mostly slow to fair. Try a chartreuse tube jig, tipped with a mealworm and salmon egg.
