A Carbon High diver “flips out” while competing in an earlier match at home in November of 2006. |
The 3A Region eight diving meet was held in Park City on January 27. The boy’s team from Carbon had a great showing, taking five out of six of the top places.
Travis Hobbs captured the top spot garnering first. Brett Wells followed up with third and right on his heels were Travis Hepworth in fourth and Kent Olsen in fifth.
Sophomore Nick Torres just missed the top six as he placed seventh. It was his best performance this year. James Machenski rounded up the divers from Carbon who qualified for state with a ninth place finish. Nathan Hepworth just missed qualifying with the 11th spot. As of press time there was an outside chance Nathan Hepworth might still make the cut.
Coach Foster was impressed with the efforts of his divers. “Nick Torres had some great dives. He really did well on his inward 1 and one half somersault as well as his two twisting dives.” He added, “Travis Hepworth had an excellent dive, as he scored 8 out of 10 on his inward dive. He could not have entered the water any better.” But then he went on to say “Travis Hobbs is still trying to get things together. He had a few good dives, but not enough to get the high scores he used to. Maybe he is trying to drive his coach crazy and is saving the good dives for the state championships.” He summed it up with a compliment to all, the support he had from most of the parents traveling to the region meet.
Carbon will head to the state championship meet on Feb. 1 at BYU in Provo. The meet will begin at noon.
