Letter to the Editor: Honor the athletes

I think that we should honor those who are from Carbon County and have gone on to do great things athletically.
One good example is Jan Jorgensen. He is the second son of Jeff and Julie Jorgensen of Helper. While attending Carbon High he was a state champion wrestler and an outstanding football player. This didn’t happen by chance. Jan came by his athletic ability because his father was a Utah State football player and after coming to Carbon County was the football coach at Helper Junior High and then the high school.
Jan’s older brother, J.D., was also an outstanding football player and played for the University of Utah.
Jan had decided after he left high school to play football for the University of Kentucky, but while on a mission for his church he was contacted by BYU and decided to change his destination.
As a freshman he became a defensive lineman starting for BYU and was named to the Freshman All-American Team by the Sporting News.
Now that BYU has won the Mountain West Conference crown the team will play in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 21.
This is a great honor for Carbon County people. Others are also honoring us.
Some of those include Brady Martinez, who was a great pitcher at Carbon High, who has now signed a contract with the New York Yankees.
And what about Monica Shorts who is having an outstanding college career playing volleyball at Westminster College.
And of course we can’t forget the Warburton girls who have played or are playing at four different colleges in the state and have done an outstanding job at those schools.
We need to appreciate these and the other outstanding young people of Carbon County.
